Is there even a definition?

General

The definition of emo is a very controversial issue. Anyone you ask is going to define emo in a totally different way.

There are several things that are for sure:

- Emo does not refer to the emo of the 80's

- Emo is a form of new music, and today it is used to describe bands such as Fall out Boy. Not the underground bands of the 80's. Cry if you like, it's the truth.

- Being a scene kid does not mean you have to cut. It just happens that a lot of emo kids cut.

- Emo is a fashion (whether you agree or not)

The Staple of the Scene

General

The staple of the emo scene is the myspace style photos and the awesome clothes. Computers have changed the way we interact together, and the emo movement has embraced this and scene kids have been sharing their unique fashion on myspace, hi5, and emobucket like never before.

Check out these stereotypical emo pictures:

Emo Posers

General

With any new sub-culture, there is always a lot of talk about who is a poser, what makes you a poser, and how you can be true to the sub-culture. Emo is no different.

To avoid looking like another emo poser, you should really know your emo music before you go off talking to other emo kids about what's new in the scene.

It's hard not to be a poser when pretty much everyone in a sub-culture is conforming to one another, but you can be true to the emo scene by emerging yourself deeply in your local emo scene. Check out the local emo shows, meet new friends, and re invent yourself from the ground up if you want to look hardcore.

Don't just slap on your sisters clothes, a little eye liner, and hit the local scene thinking you will fit in.
